One prospective bride got the surprise of her life when her boyfriend popped the question on the big screen. Hannah McDonagh from Bristol thought she was just going to the cinema as a birthday treat when to her amazement the main feature wasn't the arty French film that she was expecting but her boyfriend Pete Simson prancing around the Somerset countryside in his pants in a unique marriage proposal!
The special screening took place at the Watershed cinema in Bristol where all the staff were in on the unique marriage proposal. Special tickets were printed and a fake audience arranged so that the surprise would be authentic. The usual pre-feature adverts were screened and then the lights dimmed for the main feature which showed Pete dancing around various Bristol and Somerset locations including Cheddar Gorge and the Clifton Suspension Bridge whilst wearing coloured underpants and miming the words to Daniel Bedingfield's “If You're Not the One”.
His prospective fiancee watched the film totally gobsmacked before Pete got down on one knee as the closing credits rolled. The auditorium of fake cinemagoers then broke out in applause as Hannah accepted his proposal.
Hannah later told Bristol's Evening Post: "I was totally shocked. I had no idea what was going on. Everyone else in the cinema was in on it and they were all looking at me. They were all watching it like it was really ordinary. I didn't realise it was a proposal until near the end when Pete stood up and put his hand in his pocket. I thought it was a birthday message. It's amazing that he has put so much effort into it."
Pete said: "I wanted to do something a bit different, because after all, you only propose once. Daniel Beddingfield's If You're Not the One is the most romantic song, so I thought I would do a bit of a film and I asked my two flatmates to help film and edit it."
He added: "I was nervous as I hadn't seen the final edit, but I was well chuffed with it. Hannah just gawked, her mouth just fell open, and she was crying."
A spokeswoman for the Watershed cinema told the newspaper that "We were delighted to be able to help out with this unique romantic proposal. Everyone couldn't help but giggle when the proposal film came on - it was all done with a great sense of fun. The whole team pulled together - projection, events, front of house and the admin staff worked to make it a success. We're all romantics at heart."
The engaged couple are now planning the sequel - the wedding for next summer. As to whether it the proposal video gets a second showing or whether the sequel involves more dancing in brightly coloured briefs, bride to be Hannah says we will have to just wait and see!
