Why are women plagued by cellulite? It seems to have little to do with being overweight - men don't suffer from this scourge, however podgy. Apparently, it's down to oestrogen, the female hormone that tells our bodies to lay down fat on our bottoms and thighs. This is what causes the dreaded dimpling. Also, blood circulation plays a part. Increasingly sedentary as we are, our bums don't get to shake around very much in the normal course of the day, which causes fat cells to swell up and give you that lumpy look. Lastly, men have a thicker hide than we do - literally - so that fat cells can't be seen as easily as they can underneath women's thinner, more delicate dermis.
So how to enjoy your honeymoon without fretting about orange peel thighs? Start now, a few months before the great day arrives, and attack the problem by reviewing your diet, strengthening and toning your skin, and improving your circulation in the cellulite zone.
For a smooth, beautiful bottom, eat wholegrains, brightly coloured fruit and veg, dairy products - yes, you read that right - and eggs, fish and poultry. Nibble on nuts and seeds, and use olive oil in your cooking. An apple a day will supply you with lecithin, which strengths the walls of skin cells. This diet will give you vitamins, fatty acids and antioxidants, and if your diet is sometimes less than healthy, consider taking these essential elements as supplements.
To get your circulation going, buy a body brush and start brushing every day before showering, using upward strokes toward the heart. You should notice smoother, silkier skin over time. And jump on a PowerPlate at the gym - the vibrations will help to massage away your dimples.
Do cellulite creams work? They've had a bad press, but they can help a certain amount with solving the problem - only if you're body brushing, boosting your circulation and eating well, though. Don't imagine that smoothing on a cream will magic away those pesky fat cells - you have to work! Never mind - just think of your new husband smiling proudly as you do your Bond Girl wiggle around the swimming pool on honeymoon!
