A Groom's Guide to Honeymoons

What does the groom actually do in the way of helping out with the wedding arrangements? Good question. He's expected to show up, rings intact, in a good state of repair - not still tarred and feathered after too lively a stag night - wearing a fetching suit and maybe even a top hat. Other than that, his best man will guide him through the order of events, his in-laws might well have footed the bill, and his bride will have organised the rest of the day down to the last sugared almond in the last silver dish.

But, and it's a big but, the honeymoon is largely held to be the gentleman's responsibility. It's his job to research, track down and secure the best room in the best hotel in the most romantic place on earth - whether that's Florence, Famagusta or Folkestone. It's not a time to indulge personal ambitions or whims - no football tournaments should be attended on honeymoon, and if the bride can't swim, forget that fortnight scuba-diving off the Great Barrier Reef. Discuss the destination thoroughly with your lady, don't decide for her, learn the great marital art of compromise.

Having said that, some free-spirited, or just plain trusting, brides might prefer to leave the decision to their husband and be told only: 'Pack six bikinis and your suntan oil.' Some people love surprises. If your new wife is an adventurous soul, take the plunge and arrange a surprise honeymoon. You know her best.

But don't leave the flights, hotel bookings etc to the last minute. This has to be perfect, smooth and effortless. It's going to be a lasting memory. Make it a beautiful one. Don't risk misunderstandings or cancellations - plan ahead. And be prepared to spend generously on the most significant holiday of your life - your first as a married couple. It will set the tone for what comes next.

Of course, not every bride will want to loll on a sunny beach for two weeks or ritz it up in a plush hotel. Some altruistic souls might prefer to spend their honeymoon working for others in a voluntary organisation overseas, or doing a sponsored walk or cycle ride in an exotic location for a good cause. If this sounds more attractive to you and your missus, then go for it - it'll be a honeymoon you'll never forget...
