Battle of the Brides - Bridal Rivalry

Published on 28 January 2009

Bride Wars is the latest romantic comedy to hit the big screen. Like many of you brides to be, best friends, Emma and Liz have been planning their dream day at the Big Apple's ultimate destination, the Plaza Hotel since childhood. When their beloveds pop the question, it looks as like their childhood dreams will actually come true. But then again, as this is Hollywood maybe not! A clerical error means that although they had booked different days for their nuptials, they actually end up having to have their weddings on the same day. And that's when the battle of the brides begins!

Now hopefully you have not managed to book your dream wedding at the same venue and on the same day as your best friend (unless you want to of course!) but how do you make sure that bridal rivalry doesn't spoil both your special days as well as cause a rift that cannot be mended? After all, best friends are supposed to be there for one another forever through all those long heartfelt chocolate binges and good old fashion advice that your new husband just doesn't get.

Friendly (or unfriendly) advice. You can guarantee that as soon as you get that sparkler on your finger, all your friends married or not will start offering advice and hints on what you should or should not do. Although it might not seem it when they are in your ear all the time, they do only have your best interests at heart. They just want to let you know what worked and didn't work on their own big day so you don't have to make the same mistakes. Simply thank them for their input and say that you will bear in mind their advice but you have different ideas for your own big day.

Budget woes. Money is often the downfall of many a friendship when one friend perhaps starts moving in different circles. There is always going to be someone who has a budget that is bigger and better than yours but a beautiful wedding doesn't have to be about a big budget. If your friend is bragging about her big and expensive wedding and designer dresses etc, just remember that it's all those personal little details that you and your guests will remember and they don't have to cost a fortune. Take a step back and focus on what you and your partner want.  After all, it's supposed to be your day and not that of your best friend.

With this dress I thee wed. You have been looking at wedding dresses with your best friend and you have both fallen in love with the same dress. Now this is a hard one as there is nothing worse than turning up to an event to find you are wearing the same outfit as someone else. But if you can't come to some amicable agreement whereby one of you finds another ‘perfect' dress, you should be flattered that you both share the same good taste and fashion sense. Unless you are like the brides in the film and are getting married on the same day at the same venue, none of your guests are likely to notice that you are wearing the same style dress and you can accessorise it so that your look is original and personal to you. Check out our wedding bags, heeled wedding shoes and bridal gloves for all those little touches that'll make it unique to you.
