Budget Brides

That wretched credit crunch! Why should it put a crimp in your day of days? And yet not every couple has Posh and Becks' disposable income. So cancel the twin thrones, forget the Versace gown and get hardheaded - there are many ways to save your cash and still have a beautiful wedding. Coleen and Wayne Rooney spent five million on their nuptials, but that didn't stop it raining on the bride!

Last year, the average spend on a wedding was up to 20 thousand pounds. This year, that's being slashed by three quarters down to five thousand. So consider these canny tips. Start by deciding what you really need, and what you don't. Engraved invitations? Party favours? A three-tier cake? A professional disco or string quartet? All very optional. Downsize! And don't have an over-the-top hen night - gather your girl friends for a party at home.

If you get married 'off-peak', you'll save a bundle on the venue. Don't get married on a Saturday, or between May and October, and you'll see prices fall. And if the wedding's next year, book your caterers, florist and photographer in this year, to pay this year's prices. Ask clever friends and family to help - who's a cake queen? Who can play the violin while the guests arrive? Do you know a budding fashion designer who'll help with your dress or your bridesmaids'? And if the budget's really tight, you could ask your guests to bring a food contribution and create a splendid buffet, instead of giving you wedding presents. Bulk-buy your wine on a sale or return basis, and if you are hiring caterers, don't ask for strawberries in midwinter - be seasonal, it's always cheaper.

Be careful with the wedding list. If money's an issue, don't over-invite. 'Plus ones' might have to fall by the wayside, plus family members you simply never usually see. Keep it smaller and more intimate, with the people who really matter.

As for the bride. she can cut corners without sacrificing her glamour. Scout around for last year's wedding gowns that are being sold off because they're out of season - they'll still be beautiful. And get your hair cut or coloured at a hairdressing salon's 'model' night, for free. Get your legs waxed, your nails done and your skin pampered at the local beauty training school! Meanwhile, the groom could score a free hire of his outfit if all his male attendants go to the same hire shop to be kitted out. Bargain!
