No denying it, weddings cost money, and you want your special day to be just that - really special. But there are ways to create marvellous memories without paying for it over the next ten years. For a start, draw up a budget. How much do you have to spend, and will savings give you more splash-around cash? How much can you both put in the pot? And how do you want to distribute the money - great venue, ritzy reception, fabulous honeymoon?
As you go along, keep a record of everything you spend, from the confetti to the dress, the rings to the flowers. Look for great deals on absolutely everything. Get married on a weekday to really save money, and be flexible on your dates - avoiding the super-popular times of year like midsummer, Valentine's Day and New Year will save you cash. Also, having your ceremony and reception later in the day are all cheaper options.
Start saving if you have some time in hand, and stash your cash as soon as you get paid. Find a savings account with a decent rate of interest. And if you don't want to be deluged with toasters, ask for travel vouchers instead of gifts, so that you can have the honeymoon you really want.
Other money-savers: send invitations by email, buy flowers in season, leave out the party favours, employ onsite caterers instead of hiring an outside firm, be restrained with the quantity of drink on offer (but not the quality), dispense with an elaborate sit-down meal and have a buffet instead. Get a friend to be your DJ, borrow a pretty garden to hold your reception party in, or simply opt out and treat a bunch of friends and family to a nice meal in a restaurant, then take off for the sun. It's all up to you!
