Eco Weddings for the Green Bride and Groom

The chicest colour is definitely green these days. Recent figures suggest that the average wedding generates 14.5 tonnes of carbon dioxide, sobering when you reflect that you or I only generate about 12 tonnes all year. So more and more environmentally conscious couples are going down the eco route when planning their wedding.

We all know that you can snap up a gorgeous second-hand wedding dress at Oxfam, but there are lots more ways to recycle, reuse and help preserve the planet, from ordering biodegradable invitation cards and confetti (check out our environmentally friendly rose petal wedding confetti) to asking a local farm or organic grocery to supply all the food for the reception.

So, do you want to be totally green or just light green? Well, it's a good start to try and minimise waste at the wedding. Could you email invites instead of sending cards? Could you forget an elaborate wedding cake and have great puddings instead? Also, try and source everything locally - food, flowers, outfits, rings. You could arrange to donate leftover food to a local homeless shelter, and send the flowers to a local hospital when you've enjoyed your day. Choose flowers that are in season - don't have them flown across the world just to decorate your table. If it's a winter wedding, go for holly and berry bouquets, or use pot plants or growing herbs to beautify your reception. See? Weddings with a conscience don't have to be dull!
