We would like to offer our congratulations to any of you brides to be who got engaged over the festive period. Did Santa bring you that diamond in your stocking or did the love of your life get down on one knee as Big Ben chimed midnight and fireworks lit up the sky on New Year's Eve??

However your beloved popped the question though we're sure that it was totally perfect and now you're looking forward to growing old together in married bliss.

Talking of growing old together in a lifetime of married bliss though, one young couple in Germany really did decide to get started young. Childhood sweethearts Mika and Anna-Lena aged 6 and 7 years tried to elope on New Year's Day to Africa taking Mika's 5 year old sister with them as a witness. According to police spokesman Holger Jureczko, the tender aged lovers are "very much in love" and thought that Africa would be a good place to start married life together!

The idea for the romantic elopement to foreign climes evidently came while the two families celebrated New Year's Eve together. The groom to be told the girls about a recent family holiday to Italy where it had been warm and they decided that Africa would be even warmer, perfect for a wedding.

As 2009 dawned the young couple and their witness put their romantic plans into action packing all those essentials that you for a wedding into three suitcases, including summer clothes, food, sunglasses and even a pink lilo! The trio then left the house in the suburbs of Hanover in the early hours of New Years day while their parents slept, walked a kilometre to the tram stop where they then took a tram to the central train station. Police managed to stop them before they got on a train to the airport, telling them it would be difficult to get to Africa without tickets or money! Instead police took the young lovers and their bridesmaid on a tour of the police station before handing them over to their parents. Perhaps not the romantic outcome that the young lovers had in mind but perhaps a happier one for their parents!
