The sun may be shining here in the UK as we make the most of a British heatwave for once but in the rural villages of India, they asking the Gods for rain. Fed up with a prolonged dry spell, villagers in Assam have taken the unique measure of marrying two frogs in an attempt to please the rain gods.

All the residents of Chipoha turned out for the unique wedding ceremony in which two frogs caught by the villagers themselves were joined in Holy Matrimony. In true wedding tradition, the frogs were decked out in wedding finery and the women even gave the frog bride a necklace for the occasion!

According to Hindu tradition, if a frog marriage is performed with full Vedic or Hindu rituals, then the rain god is pleased and it rains. The residents are hoping therefore that the frog marriage will break the drought has been affecting the region for the past couple of months and bring on an early monsoon. Local priest, Uttam Goswami told The India Times, said “The marriage went off well. Our region is absolutely parched and we need rain. We didn't know what else to do. We hope that the rains will finally come and people can start cultivation.”

And they are not the only area of the country that have been carrying out the unique tradition. Similar ceremonies have been held all across the area in a bid to get an early monsoon. Let's just say it puts another slant on the Princess kissing the frog in a bid for Prince Charming! And perhaps it's not a ritual that we need to perform here in the UK. In fact we are usually praying for the exact opposite during our traditional English summer!
