Your man might spend much of his daily life in a dull office suit, or he might be allergic to suits and live in friendly jeans and T-shirts, but on his wedding day he is required to take sartorial matters more seriously and provide a dashing foil for his bride. This won't apply if you're having an eco wedding in a tepee and a campfire reception, in which case kaftans and Birkenstocks are the order of the day, but if the event is run along more conventional lines, that might be Moss Bros you hear calling you.

The classic three piece suit - smart jacket, single or double-breasted, waistcoat, and tailored trousers - is still pretty hard to beat. If tailor-made, it will fit like a glove, even if you, your best man and your ushers range from 4ft 11 to 5ft 5, and will look soberly attractive on every man. If you find black funereal, go for silver-grey, navy blue, a subtle tweed, or even a strong plain colour like dark green.
Avoid velvet unless you're Laurence Llewellyn-Bowen, and don't be overly fancy in the cravat department - a simple white or cream silk will suffice. If wearing a tie and sporting a pocket-handkerchief, you would be advised to find out what colour the bridesmaids are wearing and tone in with it - if they're in lilac, don't wear a bright red tie! Likewise your shirt - your get-up must complement your bride's colour scheme, not compete with it.

Now's the time to invest in a simply brilliant suit that you will be able to wear for years. Paul Smith does fabulous suits for men, but you won't get change from a thousand pounds. Or look for Italian-made suits from your local tailor, who will also be able to customise an off-the-peg suit by tweaking it to fit you perfectly. If you're splurging, go to Savile Row, home of the great British suit, and order a bespoke outfit - but remember, a work of art isn't going to be ready overnight...
On a budget, or not keen on spending a lot on the tailored, formal look? Off to Moss Bros with you. You can hire a terrific suit, complete with top hat if you so desire, for a modest outlay, and return it (in good condition) once the confetti's all swept away.
