Great Bridal Hair

Your crowning glory needs to be pampered and protected for months before your wedding in order to be your most effective accessory. Be gentle with it, and if you're growing it for the big day, go easy on blow drying and straightening, tonging and brushing, so that it's strong and silky in time for that special date.

Once you've chosen your dress, you'll be able to decide on the style you'll be wearing your hair in. Short hair will look best sleek and gorgeously coloured, held back with a pretty band or enlivened with a small veiled hat or dramatic hair fascinator. A bob can be smooth and polished to complement a fashion-forward frock, or curled and tousled to add softness to a minimal gown. Long hair can be left full and wild, straightened for a sculptural, modern look, or swept up into a bun or chignon to suit a romantic long dress.

Make friends with your hairdresser. He or she will be able to advise you on how to care for your hair, what colour suits you best, and what will look most effective with your dress. You'll also be able to call on them to do your hair on the day itself - not to mention your mum, sister and bridesmaids.

If the wedding's in spring or summer, there's nothing prettier than using real flowers as part of your hairdo. A garland or wreath of blossoms will look beautiful on long hair, or you can have just a couple of flowers twisted into your hair to add colour and freshness. (Make sure they're cleverly inserted in a tiny hidden vial of water, so that they don't droop!) Or use ropes of pearls, faux I presume, to add drama to a French plait or updo. Dark hair especially looks lovelier with some light and sparkle to bring it to life.

Whatever you choose, try not to choose a hairstyle that will date the wedding too quickly. Many is the bride who looks at her wedding album and bitterly regrets that mullet, Human League asymmetric cut or punk crop! Simple, classic styles will ensure that your pictures always look terrific.
