Happy Wedding Day Children

Getting through the emotional highs and lows of a wedding can be difficult for little ones, and the under-fives are especially unpredictable. To avoid tears and temper setting in, give some thought to their entertainment during the day, and everyone will be happy.

As a reward for good behaviour during the ceremony, why not seat your little bridesmaids and page boys at a child-sized table on scaled-down chairs, with bowls of sweets and fruit in the centre. No flowers necessary! And to keep them happy, modify the food to suit childish appetites - ice-cream could play a large part! But ensure that a sympathetic adult is seated at the table or nearby to keep an eye on proceedings and act as peacekeeper.

Provide your young guests with playthings to keep them quietly occupied through the speeches. A pot of bubble-blowing equipment will go down well, or surf the web for wedding activity packs. Pencils and crayons are always a good standby - perhaps there could be a competition to draw the bride and groom. Or let them get creative with plasticine or Play- Doh. As a special treat, you could ask their parents what special toy they covet, then supply it on the day - as long as it isn't a football rattle or machine gun.

To get the party going with a swing, get the DJ or band to play some music suitable for children. The Tweenies' Greatest Hits, anyone? And have a first dance for kids only, straight after you've taken to the floor for your first husband-and-wife partnership. They'll love letting off some steam - and might even fall asleep faster!
