How to save in style

OK, it's your big day, but not everybody has a Liz Hurley budget available. So the private jet's out, the week-long partying on two continents, the designer frocks - back to earth with a bump. However, money can't buy style, and you can have it in abundance if you just do a little planning.

First, be careful with your venue. Check out any hidden costs. Is VAT included in the fee? Are the grounds accessible or is that extra? An all-inclusive deal will save you a lot of money. And choose a venue with a kitchen, as doing the catering onsite is always less expensive. And if you go for a beautiful venue, like a room in a stately home or old hotel with exquisite painted walls and ceilings and elegant furniture, you won't have to go mad decorating it.

Don't skimp on the food and drink, but just offer one menu - simple, high quality and unfussy. Let the wine and champagne be memorable, and forget the party favours and confetti, elaborate flower arrangements and three-tier cake. Or have a relaxed buffet meal instead, which cuts down on the serving staff and lets guests pick and mix. If you're having a free bar, stock it with wine and beer (have a money-saving trip to Calais, or make a deal to bulk-buy with your local off-license) but don't offer spirits.

If you want flower arrangements, buy seasonally. Don't buy expensive hothouse flowers that might have been flown across the world. And it's very stylish to focus on just one flower, depending on the season - roses, lilies, dahlias or, in winter, holly leaves.

As for music, hire a DJ - half the cost of a band, and they'll still be happily spinning the CDs long after a band will have packed their amps and gone. Also, you can have endless fun dictating the playlist!
