How about a medieval wedding, for instance? Not so much scruffy peasants and nasty sheriffs as King Arthur and Queen Guinivere. Oops, hope the best man doesn't turn into Lancelot! That's early, mythic medieval, or you can advance to the 10th century and play at Robin Hood and Maid Marian in the greenwood, go for Sir William Wallace (Braveheart if you have Scottish blood, or leave the middle ages for the dawn of the Renaissance and recreate a picture by Leonardo or Botticelli.
The venue should have a Gothic look, either the genuine article or Victorian Gothic revisited. Stained glass windows, tapestries, pointy turrets, minstrels' galleries.
For your outfit, look at art and history books, or visit a theatrical costumiers. Many bridal shops will offer a 'medieval' style dress with flowing sleeves, sweeping skirts and square bodice, in tapestry, velvet or gold. As for shoes, how about something like Henry Kaye's Victorian wedding boots (okay so not quite genuine medieval but close enough and they will certainly keep those ankles warm in a draughty Gothic castle!) If you want to really go for all out theatrical, then what about some wedding gloves snaking up your arms? Our ruched satin bridal gloves look just the part or what about the lace mitt bridal glove? And don't forget too, the bridal garter, Especially as tradition has it that in times gone by, it was thought to be lucky if a guest managed to obtain(!) a piece of the bride's clothing and you certainly don't want to be stripped by your guests who feel that they really ought to enter into the spirit of the times!!
As for your man, he might have to sport a tunic and tights - are his legs good enough to get out? No top hat and tails back then, you know!
