Fancy an exotic theme for your big day? If you're celebrating in spring or summer, then the great outdoors should lend light and freshness to your day. But if the date falls in autumn or winter, why not turn to the mysterious East and go for the rich colours, scents and sights of a Moroccan reception.
You can have a lot of fun with fabrics - that is, if you're not leaving the look to a team of professionals. Best to start from scratch and hire a marquee, even a real Bedouin tent, or at least hire a simple space like a church hall on which to impose your ideas. Imagine it draped in luxurious silks and velvets, festooned with the colours of the East!
Throw down some rich rugs, perfume the air with incense, and enrich the scene with vivid flowers (fake if you're in the depths of winter). Think velvety shades like crimson, gold, orange, earthy brown and ochre. Bombard your guests with mellow colours, strong scents and strokable textures. Keep lighting low key, and don't forget - your stage set has to be fireproof!
What to eat? Well, vol-au-vents and quiches are definitely inappropriate. Go for a delicious meze of houmous, couscous, spicy stews and falafel, served in individual tagines - the funnel-shaped ceramic crocks used in Morocco - and accompanied by mint tea. Save the wine for later, when the entertainment starts. Seat your guests on big cushions (low stools for the elderly) and use low round tables.
After dining, you can delight your guests with a troupe of belly-dancers or snake charmers, and hire a Moroccan band to provide the music. This is one wedding they'll never forget...
