Romance is bad for your health…

Published on 25 August 2009

Or so scientists would have us believe. According to US researchers the romantic candlelit dinner is soon to be a thing of the past as scented candles are bad for your health. The American Chemical Society's Annual Conference heard last week that the smoke given off by scented candles is laced with harmful toxins linked to cancer, eczema and asthma.

Researchers at the South Carolina State University burnt a range of candles in a lab and collected and tested the smoke that they gave off. Paraffin candles, which are the most common type, released potentially harmful amounts of chemicals that could be bad for your health. Beeswax candles and soy candles were found on the other hand to be safe to use.

Dr Amid Hamidi, one of the researchers told the Daily Mail: "An occasional paraffin candle and its emissions will not likely affect you. But lighting many paraffin candles every day for years or lighting them frequently in an unventilated bathroom around a tub, for example, may cause problems."

The advice was reiterated in the Daily Mail article by Dr Noemi Eiser, of the British Lung Foundation, who said that “the occasional use of paraffin candles should not pose any risk to (their) lung health.
'However we would advise people to take sensible precautions when burning candles, such as opening a window to keep the room ventilated to minimise the amount of emissions breathed in.”
