Romeo and Juliet’s balcony opens for weddings

Published on 18 March 2009

Romeo, Romeo, where for art thou Romeo??  Aspiring Juliets can now tie the knot on the balcony immortalised in the greatest love story of all time.

In a bid to foster Verona as a centre for love and marriage and as a wedding destination to rival Las Vegas, officials have opened the balcony where Romeo wooed Juliet for weddings from next month. The 14th century Casa Di Giulietta (or House of Juliet) is in the centre of Verona and local legend says that it was once the home of the Capello family who were possibly the inspiration behind the Capulet family in Shakespeare's famous play Romeo and Juliet.  Although there is little evidence to back this up, the balcony is still one of the city's most popular tourist information.

But if you do want to marry the love of your life in the most wedding venue of all time, be aware, it doesn't  come cheap! In the package, ‘Sposami a Verona' - Marry Me in Verona which will be launched in the next few days, the privilege of marrying in the courtyard while being watched over by a bronze statue of Juliet herself will set  you back 800 euros (£740) if you're a EU national. If you come from outside the European Union then, it will cost you even more!

So do you fancy playing Juliet to your own Romeo? Then you need to make sure your wedding outfit is fit for the location too. Think lots of lace and heaving bosoms full of love and emotion.  An empire line flowing frock is perfect for you. Add a pair of Victorian wedding boots 1015 laced to the calf and you'll feel like a Shakespearean heroine for the day.  As for your young bridesmaids the Victoria ivory bridesmaid lace dress or Tallulah bridesmaid dress with a pair of simple ballet wedding slippers is just the thing for such a romantic venue.  All you need is to get you groom togged out in full morning suit and you'll be set for your own romantic drama. Just remember though that Italian officials are unlikely to look to kindly on your Romeo scaling the wall in the ultimate declaration of his undying love!
