Given our variable climate, a wedding at any time of year is going to be unpredictable! But a spring wedding really will put you at the mercy of the elements, so avoid the garden party theme, or at least plan to hire a marquee. They're available in all sizes and lots of styles, from traditional to exotic, and a godsend for creating an outdoor vibe but keeping your guests undercover.
A few trends were strong for spring weddings this year. Out went the pastel sweet-pea colours for brides and bridesmaids, in came strong shades like chocolate brown and lime green. Princess or Empire-line dresses were popular, moving away from the fluffy meringue look to more simple, elegant styles. If you're planning for next spring, the classic modern look will still be prevailing, but make sure you have a shawl, shrug or bolero to put over your shoulders - spring days can be icy. And equip your bridesmaids with pretty cover-ups too, something like the bridesmaid lace bolero or a plain satin bridesmaid bolero looks gorgeous over a simple ivory bridesmaid dress and keeps little arms warm. Many of our flowergirl dresses also have matching boleros too. Or if you're planning an early spring wedding, why not invest in a bit of luxury with the Portia Luxury Bridesmaid Fur Cape which is sure to keep cool winds at bay.
As for food, bite-sized menus have proved popullar this year. Have a buffet with scaled-down nibbles like mini bacon rolls and tiny desserts topped with fruit, instead of wading through a heavy sit-down menu. Think about cupcakes or fairy cakes rather than a three-tier wedding cake, and serve lots of fruit. Make the most of seasonal flowers to deck the table, and why not continue the garden theme by giving your guests packets of seeds as party favours?
