No matter how much time you spend on the flowers, the dress, the venue and the menu, the heart of your wedding will be the people you share the day with - your family and friends. And in order to make the day even more memorable for them, why not show them how important they are by asking them to undertake some vital tasks for you?
You'll need bridesmaids and a best man, and for these key positions, close friends or siblings should be elected. Your matron of honour, or chief bridesmaid, is traditionally the oldest of the group, or already married. She and the best man must be people you can rely on to support you through the day - unflappable, reliable, and dependable. Younger males can be ushers, little boys can be pageboys, and one lucky little boy or girl can be trusted with the job of ring bearer - a lovely job for your own child, if you have one.

Also, you are legally required to have two witnesses at your wedding ceremony. The minimum age is 16, and it's an important job, so choose carefully. A teenage family member or a close friend would both be suitable candidates, and would feel honoured to be entrusted with the role. During the ceremony, you could ask a couple of confident friends or family members to prepare readings - a poem, song or passage from a book - to represent you and your husband. This will make the ceremony much more memorable and special.
Once these vital roles have been filled, there's still more opportunities to assign tasks to family and friends. You'll need a toastmaster (or mistress) to announce all the key moments of the day, and your best friend or close sibling would do this beautifully. Also, exploit those talents! Get a musical guest to play or sing while you sign the register, or provide background music at the reception. Arty-crafty people can help by making home-made favours like bookmarks or lavender bags for the guests to take home. A clever cook can make the cake - just don't forget to mention its excellence several times during the day!
And don't limit the speeches just to parents and best man - let other important people have their say too. That way, it won't be just your wedding - it'll be everybody's.
