With this gold medal I thy wed.... Sports Celebrity Couples

Published on 22 September 2008

The Olympic Gold Medallist Sarah Webb is said to have announced her engagement to her boyfriend Adam Gosling. According to the headline in Hello, Sarah, one of the “three blondes in a boat” who won gold in the Yngling medal race got engaged to Adam Gosling, also a keen sailor when she returned from Beijing. And she is not the only member of the three blondes in a boat who will be making a sporting union. Fellow crewmember, Sarah Ayton in engaged to Olympic windsurfer Nick Dempsey and they are walking (or should we say sailing!) down the aisle in October.

All this sporting romance made our minds turn to other famous sporting couples who have defied the odds over the years and made true love the goal of all medals. After all sport has a long history of some heart melting love stories and we all love a little bit of romance……   Take a look at our tongue in cheek run down of those we think have managed to overcome the meeting of the perils of the single-minded determination needed to achieve sporting greatness.

Steffi Graff and Andre Agassi
The pair began seeing each other after they both won their respective tournaments in the French Open in 1999. It's said with the help of her love, Andre averted his decline and became the World Number One. They married in secret a private wedding at their Las Vegas home in 2001, a week before the arrival of their first child. They now have two children.

Paula Radcliffe and Gary Lough
Britain's much loved long distance runner married her coach, a former international 1500m runner in 2000. Radcliffe famously (though some might say madly) ran the 2006 London Marathon while pregnant. She then regained her pre-pregnancy fitness after the birth of her daughter in January 2007 in time for the 2007 London Marathon. Though she may regret that now as rather than making the headlines for winning, she made them for making an impromptu stop at the roadside!

Kirsty Gallagher and Paul Sampson
The sports television presenter met the Gladiators presenter and Welsh rugby player Paul Sampson when she was presenting Sky Sports. As of yet she has not managed to get him down the aisle but who knows what might happen in the future (especially if Kirsty has anything to do with it). They have a son, Oscar.

Gabby and Kenny Logan
Football presenter and ex Commonwealth Gymnast Gabby Logan was won over by the former Scotland winger Kenny Logan after he chatted her up in a pub thinking she was Gaby Roslin. She evidently let him off with a yellow card (though getting her name wrong is perhaps more of a red card offence!). They married in 2001and are now the proud parents of twins.

Zara Phillips and Mike Tindall
Royal wedding bells here perhaps. 2007 Sports personality of the year and royalty, Zara Phillips has been dating since the rugby player Mike Tindall since ……… There are no signs of an engagement yet but who knows. Let's just hope that she takes a look at Henry Kaye's range of gorgeous bridesmaid and flowergirl dresses and stunning wedding shoes should he pop the question.
